Cancelling this act is a shortsighted, foolhardy move for Ontario. The environment is in a critical stage right now, and any bit of government legislation that encourages people to make less polluting choices is a positive step in my opinion. Our province could be a national or even world leader in the alternative energy movement, which is a blossoming industry with massive potential economic benefits. We have many ideal locations for high-yield wind and solar projects.
Realistically, there is no reason to believe that the majority of corporations or individuals will make the necessary steps to reduce pollution and move towards sustainable practices on their own. There must be a significant financial incentive to make these changes otherwise the status quo will continue.
Ontario is one of the most naturally beautiful places in the world. It behooves our provincial government to do everything in its power to ensure that we all do the absolute best we can to combat climate change. There is no room for any government that is anything less than forward-thinking, committed, and serious about these issues.
