Air pollution knows no state borders. The Western Climate Initiative, a trans border cap and trade system that Ontario was formerly a part of, is one of the few good examples of intra governmental collaboration to address this issue. With Ontario's cancellation of cap and trade, opportunities for meaningful cross border work are also extinguished.
The current government's decision to cancel cap and trade serves no useful purpose. The new Act does not itemize potential benefits to Ontario residents or taxpayers, or to Canadian society as a whole. And to cancel the system without replacing it with a considered, evidence-based strategy and real targets demonstrates a recklessness that has no place in our province.
