The decision to scrap cap & trade is short-sighted, ignorant, and dangerous. All scientific data (including the recent report I linked to) shows that in order to address the climate crisis we must take worldwide, unified action by putting a price on carbon. We're already seeing the damaging impact of climate change through extreme weather, with record-breaking droughts, forest fires, and hurricanes. Put another way, if solar power (instead of fossil fuels) were causing this much harm we would have already banned the technology and put the producers of this detrimental and under-regulated industry in jail.
It's appalling that I, as a simple informed citizen of this province, has to make the case that we need to plan ahead. It should be the job of the government to work hand-in-hand with the science community in leading the charge on a whole host of policies. But instead, in this game of politics where industry money and power direct policy, the interest of citizens are put on hold as the powerful continues to profit.
I'm disgusted at the level of incompetence put-forth by this government so far. Do what's morally right and keep the cap & trade system in place. If you don't care about the future of humanity maybe you'll care about your own reputation, as history will not look kind on this Doug Ford government or anyone below him that is enabling this fact-free policy-making to continue.
