Please reject the cancellation of the Climate Change Bill.
The single biggest threat we are facing is that of climate change. I speak as a former scientist and now Ecological Farmer. Cancelling the bill is tantamount to denying climate change, denying its urgency and the role big business and our current the economic system is playing in doing harm to our ecosystem.
I can tell you that the droughts in eastern Ontario are getting so severe that farming is becoming highly problematic. Certainly, in the last 5 years, three have been significant droughts. Without water, there can be no food. Without consistent weather patterns, food production becomes difficult. In my region, people around me are finding their wells are going dry for the first time in their experience. Soil is a precious resource. I have seen how even a few droughts in a row can reduce quality soil to sand. Our forest here highlights how trees are not able to adapt fast enough to changing environmental conditions. Many now are falling into disease as a result of continual environmental stress and drought. More, I see a huge, dramatic increase in noxious species like weeds and insects as they are often better adapted then native species to harsh and changing environmental conditions.
Climate change is urgent. Please do not cancel Bill 4. This Bill is not perfect but, until a much more powerful Bill to protect the environment can be produced, its our best hope.
Thank you.
