Bill 4, the repeal of the Climate Change Mitigation and Low-carbon Economy Act, is a step backwards and will exacerbate the consequences of climate change for current and future generations. The evidence is resoundingly clear that reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is necessary to curb climate change, and that failure to act will have catastrophic effects on our planet, its biodiversity, extreme weather events, and our ability to produce food for a growing human population.
Withdrawing from this sensible and hard-won agreement will inhibit our ability to work with partners around the world to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It is a short-sighted, morally indefensible act by the Ontario government and signals an abandonment of its responsibilities to the people of Ontario to act on climate change.
