We have just seen the UN report that we (Canada and the rest of the world) are falling behind on our commitments to keep global warming to 1.5C - and weather is reminding us more and more frequently that the direct consequences for humans are significant, withoutconsidering the indirect impacts via other species. The only way to have a quick impact on human behaviour is to provide financial incentives (as well as education and moral incentives). Cap and trade is a good mechanism to do this, allowing the market to direct the carbon reduction to the easiest and quickest wins first. This should be a policy that fiscal conservatives support!
Another key consideration is the impact on our children. My children will be younger in 2050 than I am now. I want them to be able to enjoy a long and prosperous retirement. They won't be able to do that if warming exceeds 2C.
The government of Ontario should be accelerating the caps and costs under cap and trade, not cancelling the programme.
It should also restore all the other green energy initiatives it cancelled abruptly without adequate notice through this forum.
