The cancellation of the cap & trade program was a step backwards for Ontario. In 2018 we know that pollution is not free. Residents pay to have garbage removed from their houses through their taxes. Business owners pay to have garbage removed from their businesses. Factories that make air, soil or water pollution must also pay if they contaminate the environment that we all share. The UN report on climate change just released has dire warnings from the scientists that specialize in studying earth systems including climate. Heed their warnings. They say that the world must adopt stricter controls on the production of greenhouse gases but they are pessimistic that governments will listen. Could the Doug Ford government prove them wrong? Time to reinstate the cap and trade program which encourages companies to pollute less. The monies raised can and were being used to fund programs that reduce greenhouse gas emissions like home retrofits and electric car subsidies. Where will we get the money to refurbish TDSB schools for example that should be brought into the 21st century with energy efficient improvements? I don't want my tax dollars to be spent on fighting the federal government on pricing carbon. Many Ontarians understand that if we don't reduce the amount of greenhouse gases we produce we may expect disastrous consequences some of which have already come to pass: killer hurricanes, tornados, flooding, droughts, heat waves etc. Does the Conservative government in Ontario want to be known as the government that didn't act in the face of overwhelming evidence of climate change? I sincerely hope not.
