Economics works in such a way that people respond to incentives. Putting a price on pollution is the only way to ensure that people don't pollute more than they should without paying the cost of it. There is really no controversy among economists on this point. Why would citizens pay instead of the firms that cause pollution? My wife and I pay taxes and pay our share, why shouldn't polluters do the same?
Legally there is a principle, recognised by Canada's polluter pays principle whereby users and producers of pollutants and wastes should bear the responsibility for their actions. Companies or people that pollute should pay the costs they impose on society.
Please keep Ontario's Cap and Trade system, it is really not a partisan issue, it's about a planet our children and grandchildren will live in.
