I am opposed to the government of Ontario cancelling Bill 4.
Climate change is one of the major challenges of our time and it is vital that Ontario starts taking immediate steps to help mitigate the effects it will have on our environment and economy. I firmly believe it will be much more expensive if we do nothing now and try to deal with the effects as they happen.
Ontario can become a leader in the clean energy economy, by supporting renewable energy initiatives such as wind farms, creating jobs and technology that can be exported.
It is also vital that we recognize the price that pollution puts on the health of Ontarians and the environment. Instead of the taxpayer footing this bill in higher health costs, we would deal with it at the source by requiring industry and manufacturers to help pay for the costs of reducing waste and carbon emissions. We should also end subsidies and handout for fossil fuel companies. Again, it is the taxpayers who pay for the pollution they generate, while they only profit for them.
A better Ontario can be achieved with legally binding emissions targets in line with our obligations to the Paris Climate Agreement.
I want the Ontario government to take its responsibilities to the health of Ontarians and the environment we all share by cancelling Bill 4 and returning Ontario to a Cap and Trade agreement to reduce our carbon emissions.
