We have been involved in land development and home building for the past 40 years in this immediate area to the quarry. We are seriously concerned about the depth of this quarry drawing down the water levels. This area already struggles to have adequate household water supplies. As builders, we require gravel as well, however we feel that the quarry could expand outward without going deeper. We realize that ministries keep requiring harder rock for road building. However it is our opinion that these requirements could be reviewed before we sacrifice something as vital as water supplies.
The other concern we have is that this quarry is close to a school. The increased amount of trucking on the roads near the quarry will be a danger to several school bus routes. We have witnessed several close calls already with trucks turning in and out of the quarry near a busy intersection.
We feel there are other locations further north that are less populated, that could supply the same aggregate without turning this quarry into such a large one.
