I am currently studying the interactions between the White River Crayfish, Procambarus acutus, and the small-mouthed salamander on Pelee Island. Related studies suggest that P. acutus may negatively affect amphibians through preying on eggs and larvae, as well as through competing with native crayfish species that positively interact with the amphibians. I recommend recognizing that amphibians specifically are at risk of invasive crayfish. As well, I recommend prohibiting Procambarus species as bait, alive or dead.
