There has been widespread and significant invasion of shorelines on the Winnipeg river system.

It is dangerous for loss of fish spawning grounds, displacement of native aquatic plants, and the clogging of the many natural beaches.

There is a potential for loss of fisheries and tourism.

The waters and ecosystem are of great cultural and economic importance to Indigenous people in the region.

More should be done to prohibit the species and mitigate its impact and spread.
