I have a cottage in Minaki Ontario on the Winnipeg River. There is a heavy infestation of flowering rush along my frontage, as well as the frontage of all other cottagers with shallows in the Jackfish Bay area and along the Winnipeg River downstream from Kenora. It severely impacts my property, dock, and swimming area. Its clogging effect creates zones of 'dead water' and is drying up the wetlands. It has quickly spread in the past 20 years with loss of fish spawning grounds and destruction of many natural beaches. Socioeconomic impacts include potential loss of fisheries and tourism, eradication of native wild rice stands, of cultural and economic importance to indigenous people in the region. Flowering rush is a scourge that needs to be on the prohibited list of invasive species.
