I am writing to express my significant concerns regarding the proposed changes by the Ontario government to streamline permissions for temporary water taking activities, particularly the removal of the volumetric water taking limit for dewatered work areas within construction sites and the elimination of the requirement to notify the local conservation authority.
I worry that the self-registration process may lack adequate precautionary measures to prevent and monitor potential environmental harm effectively. Without oversight and thorough assessments prior to water taking, irreversible damage to water sources and ecosystems may occur unnoticed.
Post-event inspections and reactive monitoring are not as effective as proactive, comprehensive oversight.
I strongly urge the Ontario government to reconsider these proposed changes.
