Canada and Ontario has an important role to play in countering the impacts of a global community that prizes individual or consumer wellbeing over the wellbeing of humanity. I think I speak for all young people (I am a 23 year old PhD student at the University of Guelph) when I say that we desperately want a government that will take a stand against rising nationalist tendencies and protect human rights. This means a lot of things, but in this circumstance refers to the right to live in a safe and healthy physical environment across our lifespan, a privilege taken for granted by the generations before us who have created the problem (impacts of climate change) we now face. As well are well aware, no effective global agreement is likely to emerge to counter climate change. Therefore it rests on individual governments to act to protect citizens. I think Ontario is better than just ignoring the problem to facilitate short-run profit.
