In a healthy democracy, the public must be allowed to engage in the government’s decisions, especially those that affect the environment we live in. The proposed changes to the Environmental Protection Act seem to be focused on allowing industrial and water use companies to destroy our beautiful country faster and move us toward environmental catastrophe quicker. Involving the public helps to slow the process down so that due diligence has time to be executed to avoid unintended consequences. Conservation Authorities are especially needed to ensure land and water use projects are ecologically sound. The same criteria used to assess the suitability of a given project does not work in all geographic locations of the province and must be considered separately. I, as an Ontario resident, am NOT in favour of the “streamlining” of the environmental legislation being proposed.
