As th Greenbelt is an encroachment on the the uses to which land is put, and therefore reduces the value of the land, it is an effective "taking" by government. Such actions have been deemed in court trials to have a costly effect, which the taker must compensate. Therefore, either all Greenbelt restritctions must be removed or the Ontario government must pay the landowner the difference between reasonable and restricted values of the property. The simplest approach is to revoke the Greenbelt designation, but - if that is not done - then the Ontario government had better start paying the landowners.
