I find it offensive that Doug Ford things that the people don't give a damn about the Greenbelt, and expanded, the environment.
For the Greenbelt, my opinion is that we need to keep it full intact. Don't touch it AT ALL. Put any lands taken out of the GreenBelt, and put them back in. Things like the Duffins Rouge Agricultural Reserve is precious land that is home so many animals and plant species. It does not need to be freed up for housing - that's utterly ridiculous.
We need our Greenbelt land preserved for various reasons, including the growing of our food. If you turn it into housing, we can never turn back from that decision - it's a one way path. It increases our dependence on importing our food from other countries, when we have rich soil here and the ability to grow so much food. And don't get me started on the emissions produced globally to bring that food into our Province.
Another reason to keep the Greenbelt intact is that I, along with so many people I know, want our green spaces protected for recreational use. I hike the trails. I hike the Rouge Valley trail, the Seaton Trail, and the Durham Forest trails. I like that these are relatively close to home. If you start freeing up the Greenbelt for housing, those precious spaces will be lost. Not only for me, but for my children, my grandchildren, and every generation that follows.
Lastly, the type of housing that Doug Ford proposes to put on those lands is not the type of housing that Ontario so desperately needs. We don't need mega homes that are miles from good public transportation. We need creative housing in areas that are already accessible to public transportation.
There's my 2 cents....Keep your hands OFF the Greenbelt. Just leave it alone and stick to your original promise to not touch it.
