Please be advised the Greenbelt Statute Law Amendment Act is not sufficient to protect the Greenbelt for future generations. Specifically:
- it does not close procedural loopholes for Greenbelt removals during ten-year review periods;
- it should remove the power of the Minister to recommend removals of land;
- it should include a goal of expanding Greenbelt lands to prevent "leapfrog" development.
This government has put forward a good first step in protecting Greenbelt lands from development and speculation, but this act does not go far enough. The Greenbelt must be protected in perpetuity to prevent land speculation and inconsistent borders.
