I support the move to revert the removals from the greenbelt and strengthen protections.

These lands should never have been removed from the greenbelt in the first place, they are far too valuable long-term. These lands are some of the best agricultural land not only in the province, but in the entire country. Having productive farmland nearby is incredibly important as food prices rise due to global instabilities, and help with local food security by keeping prices lower for fresh, nutritious produce. Additionally, the environmental value of the greenbelt is incredibly important for the region. There are countless endangered and threatened species in the area protected by the greenbelt. For some of these species, most or all of their Ontario populations reside within this region. As a result of the protection of oak ridges moraine and other greenbelt features, southern Ontario has some of the best water in the world, and the region offers countless nearby outdoor/nature recreation opportunities.

The Province should also return to the status quo for the greenbelt review. Rushing the review two years early is unacceptable. The 10 year review should occur according to established policy, and should not be used as cover to try and remove parcels of land for development giveaways. The review should be conducted by an impartial group of experts. From there, the decision to add or remove lands can be made - but the process should be based on the original objectives of the greenbelt, not based on MMAH priorities.

The government should also focus on policies to support farmer in the greenbelt. Farming is a challenging business, and supporting farmers and agriculture as an economically and environmentally sustainable livelihood is important. While there may be opportunity to help farms with housing for families, greenbelt changes should be reverted.
