As a young person who has moved back to Ontario after attending university in another province and having now established a career here, I am disappointed that my home province is taking such a short-sighted policy decision. Why is the government not more focused on educating the public on why policies like this are important, despite the costs, for the future of our society? What we need more than ever is leadership on a national stage to push back against private industry and their financial interests and focus our efforts on making meaningful policy changes. Instead, this legislation is petty in how it has been communicated as a repeal of the previous government's efforts, with no information or detail on how the current government is going to address the issue of climate change. If it's not Cap and Trade, then what will it be? Until there is a solid replacement policy that will continue to enable Ontario to achieve it's climate targets and support Canada in reaching our national climate targets, then the current legislation should not be removed. It is so frustrating that we are focused on short-term wins instead of actually focusing on the issues that communities across the province are facing as a result of climate change. The government should trust the research published in Canada and internationally citing the risks of climate change and how serious changes need to be made in order to save our planet. The government is doing a disservice to young people who would like to start their families in Ontario, have their kids grow up in environmentally vibrant communities, with clean air, safe drinking water. I want my kids to experience winter like I did in Northern Ontario. I want to see lasting action.
