A full comprehensive environmental assessment needs to be completed by York1 to determine the negative effects on our farmland. This is a farming community, the source of many people’s income comes from agriculture in the area. Having a landfill so close to our farms risks contamination of our land and water used for irrigation from leachate and airborne particulates. This will negatively impact plant growth, crop yields, and the quality of the produce. When the leachate enters ground water there will be long-lasting threats to the productivity of the area and the safety of our food. This landfill is not only taking workable land away from farmers, it will destroy the abilities of neighbouring properties to produce agricultural products that are able to be sold and consumed due to toxicity levels from soil and water contamination. Farmers feed cities and cities dump on farmland. There will be no way to feed our country if our land is being taken from us to hold trash from overpopulated areas, they can keep their garbage and deal with it themselves, that’s what we do.
