I am very disappointed with the simplistic approach the Provincial Government is taking to climate change. The time for talk is drawing to a close, if it hasn't passed already, and what we got was a dismantling of a program that was already in place and a vague promise of more talk. We need action, not just empty words, so our grandchildren have some hope.
The simplistic suggestions to individuals, to choose cleaner travel choices (where's the support for bicycle riders?), to drink tap water and to enjoy local food will do little, if anything, to combat the effects of climate change.
I attached a link to the Actuaries Climate Index, "an educational tool designed to help inform actuaries, public policymakers, and the general public about climate trends and some of the potential impacts of a changing climate on the United States and Canada. The index is an objective measure of observed changes in extreme weather and sea levels. It is intended to provide a useful monitoring tool of climate trends and will be updated quarterly as data for each meteorological season becomes available."
This is a work product of the American Academy of Actuaries, the Canadian Institute of Actuaries, the Casualty Actuarial Society and the Society of Actuaries. Actuaries are the professionals who determine, amongst other things, whether risks can be insured and the prices that will be charged for insurance. When insurance prices rise or insurance coverage is not available, tax reductions will seem insignificant.
