This draft lacks deadlines and meaningful goals, and frankly I’m tired of seeing and hearing governments, both provincial and federal, say they are going to protect our water, wildlife, and forests and then do the absolute minimum required or worse, they have legislation like this, that is so weak that it means nothing.
The Great Lakes are under serious and growing threats, and they need better help then what this plan proposes. The Ontario government in fact just reduced protections to species with the pay-to-slay bill so that developers can built even more housing sprawl on critical habitats, and at a time where floods are becoming more frequent and severe, they cut funding in half for preventative watershed flood management. Not to mention the increase in toxic algae blooms, the 10,000 tonnes of plastic entering our lakes and killing our fish, as well as habitat loss and invasive species, like the coming of Asian carp in the near future. Climate heating is exacerbating all of these issues, and a recent study reveals the Great Lakes region is warming faster than anywhere else in the U.S.
This agreement needs the following:
1) Ambitious goals that are time-bound and measurable.
2)A $100 Million per year investment in Great Lakes protection and restoration.
3) Accountability measures and a commitment to transparent reporting of results of implementing the plan.
