As a resident of the neighbourhood that will be impacted by this project, I would like to express my concerns about the proposed facility at 633 Coronation Drive.
I have reviewed the documents and read that their summary conclusions do not alter the proposal. However, omissions to these studies affect the wider community and there are issues that need to be addressed before proceeding. From my reading, the data on noise, emissions, traffic, etc. has been collected in the immediate vicinity of the facility, but does not discuss impacts on the wider community.
These neighbourhoods are already sandwiched between a nuclear power facility to the east and chemical companies close to the proposed project. With a biogas facility added to the neighbourhood, there are increased safety and environmental risks to an already overburdened community, along with additional emissions.
Traffic studies did not address the impact of large truck traffic on inbound and outgoing routes to Hwy. 401. Facility trucks will be travelling streets that are in the process of adding bicycle and priority bus lanes, progressive transportation options that should not be sharing lanes with hundreds of industrial vehicles. We need to see mapped routes that clearly indicate which streets will be used by the trucks through the neighbourhood, and discuss how to maintain community safety.
I would urge the Ministry to call a public meeting that will allow members of the surrounding neighbourhoods an opportunity to have our questions answered about community impacts of this proposal. While I appreciate the need to find environmentally sound solutions to Toronto's waste problem, I do not feel that there has been information provided that addresses our concerns in a transparent dialogue.
If we are misunderstanding the risks of this proposal, please take the steps needed to engage directly and communicate your facts to the community before proceeding further. Thank you.
