The current tag allocation system is perfect the way it is right now. This system is a fair so everyone gets the same opportunity to draw successfully. It is absurd that people want to return to the lottery system when, right now, there are still hundreds of people who have 20+ points. These people are rightfully at the head of the line to get a tag, as they should be. These people have been faithfully applying for 20+ years and it’s their turn to be rewarded.
In regards to people being upset at the amount of tags not being claimed in the second round, so what? Another moose gets to live another season. Why is that such a terrible thing? Moose numbers are barely stable when you look at the big picture. Moose hunting is not something that is implicated to manage a population that is out of control. Moose hunting in a privilege, not a right. The blatant disrespect and entitlement for nature’s resources is disgusting.
Many factors could be at play for these tags being unclaimed. If me and my husband both apply in the second draw and are both successful, that means one of us will lose our points because a tag will go unclaimed? How is that at all right? If a group of 10 people apply, and three are successful, why should two people lose their points? If I have broken my leg, so I don’t claim my tag, why should I lose my points? If a tag is unclaimed, no one should have to start from the beginning.
The MNR does not have the resources it needs to be successful as it is. They cannot afford to complicate an already thoroughly thought out and working system. Why are people’s bellyaching being taken so seriously when the lottery system had hundreds of people never getting a tag for more than 25 years? The next thing will be people get a tag, but do not fill it, will want to have another chance the following year! They think that the number of moose harvested wasn’t as high as it could have been so it should be added to the allocation the next year. When you buy a lottery ticket, you don’t get your money back because you didn’t win.
These moose need a chance to win for a change. I have been applying for a moose tag for over 10 years, my turn will come and I will patiently wait for it. Until then, I will continue to enjoy nature and all the experiences it has to offer. People need to learn humility and patience. Times are changing and nature cannot afford for everyone to take liberties with its resources.
