I support these changes, which will make it simpler for homeowners to build ARUs on their properties. In addition, the standardization across the province and avoiding the need for extra minor variance applications will speed up construction at a time when progress has slowed, despite a great need for homes.
The province may need to consider additional regulatory standards if municipalities adapt to these changes by proposing additional requirements. For example, removing the ability to require angular planes may lead some municipalities to limit buildings in height or to one storey, frustrating the purpose or intent of the regulations. The province should monitor municipal responses in case additional regulation is needed.
