This bill is embarrassing. Not only is it a complete overreach by the province into municipal affairs, but it's going to be completely counterproductive. There is no real data to support the idea that bike lanes add to gridlock. All studies, especially those in dense urban areas like Toronto, indicate that bike lanes reduce gridlock by giving people safe, cost-effective alternatives to driving. More bike lanes means more cars off the road, which means less traffic.
Ripping up existing bike infrastructure is an hilariously poor use of taxpayer funds. It will do nothing to address the underlying issue of congestion in our cities.
This policy change is just pandering to a set of voters by "hurting the right people", in this case the "right people" being people who use bike lanes.
Please focus your time, energy, and funds on what really matters: improving life for the citizens throughout the entire province of Ontario. This will do the complete opposite, and is just political theatre.
If you want to appeal to your constituents outside of City of Toronto, do it by actually working on measures that will improve their lives, such as addressing the poor state of our health care and education systems, instead of focusing on sticking it to the people of Toronto.
