As a taxpayer, I am appalled that the Provincial Government is trying to repeal legislation that holds industry to account for the costs of their contributions to greenhouse gasses. Without the money from the cap and trade program, the taxpayers will be on the hook for these expenses. It is imperative that we deal with climate change now, losses due to more violent weather are already mounting and we are having to pay more and more to ameliorate these effects. Furthermore, removing the cap and trade program, which is not actually a carbon tax, will leave us open to having the federal government plan imposed on us, and that will cost taxpayers directly. Cancelling the money for the existing projects funded by cap and trade kills jobs, deprives communities and sends a message to industry that the Ontario Government cannot be trusted to meet its commitments. It is reckless and irresponsible to pass Bill 4 and urge you not to.
