I work on the frontline of environmental conservation and resource management in Ontario. Every day I hear from members of the public about the importance of big picture climate action and the responsibilities of elected officials at the highest levels of government. Without action at the provincial level, efforts of those at the local level such as neighbourhoods, community groups, municipalities and regional agencies (e.g. Conservation Authorities) are undermined. Grassroots climate action is growing but it needs the support of the Province. Repealing the cap and trade system sends the message to individuals and communities that want to make change that these efforts are wasted.
I urge the Premier, Minister Phillips, and the Government of Ontario to consider the impact Bill 4 will have for the reputation and integrity of Ontario as a supposed global leader for climate action and the impact the Act will have on local level efforts.
Thank you for the opportunity to comment.
