Cycling as a mode of transport should be promoted by all levels of government because compared to motorized modes of transport, it contributes less to climate change and pollution and improves health. I would like to see more bike lanes to encourage more trips by bike. Provincial legislation to hinder the development of municipal bike lanes doesn't make sense.
A recent Ipsos poll commissioned by the Toronto Region Board of Trade reported that 86% of respondents agree that there is a traffic and congestion crisis in the region. When asked about the causes of congestion, 68% said too much construction and mismanagement of construction schedules, and 57% said too many cars and trucks on the road. According to the press release, bike lanes were not listed as a commonly sites cause of congestion.
Reducing bike lanes will not reduce gridlock but will increase environmental degradation and cyclist deaths.
