My colleagues partner was killed on his bicycle by a car driver on a downtown street. If he had been in a bike lane (there wasn't one) this may not have happened.
I cycle to work at the hospital every day and value the presence of these bike lanes for mine and others safety. The only time I have seen congestion on University Avenue was when a car blocked the intersection.
Our city is already too busy, too noisy, and too unsafe. Removing the bike lanes is only going to make that worse, and will do nothing to help congestion.
