Eliminating alternative modes of transportation is counter-productive.
The "millions of drivers" referred to also includes a high proportion of people who wish they DIDN'T need to drive, and possibly causing more unsafe situations on the roads (ie. elderly, unassimilated immigrants, youth).
"Build it and they will come." - can be understood 2 ways:
- Build a more connected bike network, and more people will leave their cars (reduce traffic).
- Build more roads, and more cars and traffic will come (you are signaling the only mode of transit).
Look at the evidence. Its all there. Alternative modes of transportation (bike lanes) reduce traffic.
