There is no evidence to suggest that removing bike lanes will in any way increase the speed of traffic. The proponents of this plan rely on “common sense“ but do not actually provide any scientific basis for their claims.
Scientific studies do, however, show that protected cycling infrastructure has a positive effect on the number of road users cycling, which is a societal good, and also a reduction in injuries by cyclists.
For what it is worth, common sense would dictate that the more road users there are on bicycles, the fewer there are trying to get around by car, which would lead to a decrease in car traffic and a decrease in travel times.
The government’s plan to rip out bike lanes and make it more difficult to install new ones is offensive, it will not improve travel times for motorists, and it will lead to residence being injured and killed in greater numbers.
