I was relieved to hear that the provincial government has decided to act on the bike lane issue.
Common sense must prevail.
I just want to be clear, I’m not against bike lanes, i enjoy riding my bike, but Bloor St West is not the place to construct bike lanes.
They are being underutilized Many times I ‘ve driven this route in the rush hour and have counted maybe a dozen cyclists at most on these bike lanes (both directions) from Kipling to High Park
It has caused more traffic congestion with cars idling in traffic not moving which is actually contributing to more carbon emissions
But my main concern is with safety. Was there any thought of how these bike lanes would impact accessibility for disabled people or seniors? Parking spaces are tight. When you park your car, you literally open your car into traffic . There is not enough space. On the passenger side you have the same situation but with bike traffic.
Last week I witnessed a very close call . Somebody was dropping off an elderly passenger on Bloor st near Royal york . They pulled over into a parking space and the elderly passenger got out from the passenger side of the vehicle that put them directly into the bike lane path. A bike was travelling down the path and nearly struck the pedestrian. It is not safe. Normally you would have a curb right next to the passenger side of the vehicle. Did council not consider these potential safety issues?
You can just install bike lanes everywhere. It has to make sense. It is not a one size fits all scenario
