Cycling plays a vital role in reducing traffic congestion and promoting environmental sustainability. However, this new legislation threatens the progress we’ve made toward building safer, more accessible infrastructure for cyclists. This legislation is a direct attack on Toronto and is just wasting our tax dollars, especially for people who do not live or work in that area.
My city of Guelph is home to many seniors who should not be driving, students who do not own cars, and low-income residents who cannot afford one. Cycling is often the most viable transportation option for these groups, but it is only feasible if we continue to improve and protect our bike infrastructure. Without safe bike lanes, we risk pushing more cars onto the roads, leading to greater traffic congestion and unsafe conditions for everyone.
