Regarding the management of trails within the new Uxbridge Urban Provincial Park, it would be helpful to build on the system of map signage used within the TRCA lands which I assume will be eventually added to the park. We have received a lot of positive feedback over the years for the use of localized maps on top of numbered 6x6 posts, sloped to point north. The numbered posts displayed on the maps allow trail users to easily monitor their location and plan. Overall maps are located at kiosks in key access points.
Also, a clause, under 7.3.4, elaboration of stewardship support with local organizations might include the maintenance or medications of trails signage and training such as controlling invasive species and chainsaw use and training to clear fallen trees from trails.
Under long term goals, #8, I would like to see the desire of the park to be a strong link for active transportation by including the rail trail link between Simcoe Street south of Manila and Lakeridge Road. This section of the Trans Canada Trail is not within Uxbridge Township, it is in Durham Region. Besides being an important transportation link for hikers and cyclists, it also goes through important ecological wetlands. At the moment it lacks important stewardship that the urban park could provide, protection from motorized vehicles and proper signage. From a tourism point of view, this is one of the very few trails that could be on a standard of use that cyclists and hikers use in various parts of the world. It would be attractive to users who value wider opens spaces between zones of urbanization.
