Removing the environmental assessment for this landfill is a short-sighted, irresponsible move for the residents of Dresden, Chatham-Kent, and Lambton county, as well as the Sydenham watershed.
The site is located in an environmentally sensitive watershed, feeding directly into the Sydenham River. A landfill located directly on the banks of Molly's Creek means that there will undoubtedly be contamination in the watershed no matter the precautions taken. Extreme weather events are occurring almost yearly now, with extreme rainfall meaning every watercourse is flooded over its banks.
Running thousands of trucks along the 401 through Chatham-Kent to get to the site will create a disaster of municipal roads, a huge increase in traffic through the town of Dresden, a danger to children at 2 schools within the town, and a major disruption to the agricultural industry.
Not to mention that having a landfill less than 1km from the edge of town means that thousands of residents will undoubtedly have to deal with nuisance smells, debris, and trash floating around through the community.
Don't force this landfill opening on a town and community that clearly does not want it, especially when it's the community that takes the brunt of Toronto's trash.
