This proposed legislation needs to be reconsidered and revised. Allowing developers to carry on with their projects following mere registration creates an inherently flawed system. Enforcing species and habitat protection becomes reactive rather than proactive in this case, which is especially dangerous when dealing with at-risk species.
This legislation could potentially harm several vulnerable species and creates a loophole for developers to avoid environmental assessments. In addition, narrowing the definition of what a habitat is will potentially affect survival of some species by reducing their access to broader ecological spaces.
In its current form, the proposed legislation appears to prioritize political and economic interests over ecological responsibility. For the sake of Ontario’s biodiversity, I urge the government to strengthen species and habitat protections rather than weaken them.
