Toronto should not dump its garbage in Dresden because it imposes an unfair environmental burden on a smaller, rural community. Dresden, a town with a much smaller population and fewer resources than Toronto, would be forced to deal with the long-term consequences of waste management decisions made elsewhere. This includes increased risks of soil contamination, air pollution from waste processing, and the possibility of groundwater pollution, which could harm local agriculture and public health. It is unjust for urban centers to offload their waste problems onto communities that may lack the political power to oppose them.
Transporting Toronto’s garbage to Dresden also creates significant logistical and environmental issues. The fuel and energy required to haul tons of waste over long distances contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and increase wear and tear on road infrastructure. This contradicts broader environmental goals to reduce carbon footprints and promote sustainable waste practices. Toronto should invest in local solutions like reducing waste at the source, enhancing recycling programs, and developing cleaner waste-to-energy technologies rather than exporting its problem elsewhere.
Finally, dumping garbage in Dresden can erode trust and relationships between urban and rural communities. It conveys that rural areas are disposable or less valuable, fostering resentment and division. Decisions about waste disposal should be made with input from all affected communities, respecting their right to clean environments and healthy futures. Toronto must take responsibility for its waste and seek innovative, community-focused solutions that do not place the burden on others.
