I cannot express how strongly I disagree with this decision. Designation of 'special economic zones' will override and disrespect existing legislation that is in place to protect Ontario's environment. The Ford government's actions in the past month have shown that the Premier and his cabinet care more about money than they do protecting the land we live on. Giving special treatment to his buddies is Ford's MO, and this act is nothing more than making legal that which was already happening. This proposal may as well have said "We did not want to get caught out for being corrupt, so we made our disgusting decisions legal. There's nothing you can do about it." Everyone knows that this act will ignore science, Indigenous communities, and the public in favour of pursuing projects that will make a few, already rich people, richer. The amount of information included in this "consultation" is laughable. This government is doing extremely little to hide the fact that they will do whatever they want, regardless of what Ontarians think. This act is a slap in the face to small businesses, who we all know will never be given the title of "trusted proponent" or any access to these zones, let alone the "benefits" the Ford government claims they will have. Did Ford give local, Ontarian businesses rights when he blazed forward with the highly contested changes to Ontario Place? No. He gave it to Therme, an international company. This act is deplorable and just another example of how Ford wants to Trump Ontario and make it his own personal money maker at the expense of the public, the environment, and our dignity as citizens toiling under his thumb.
