Hello,

I did not have time to review the current Corridor Signing Policy so my comments are general in nature.

In most cases, billboards along highways are a blight on the landscape, whether rural or urban. I believe Ontario should ban billboards along provincial highways, as several US jurisdictions have done. This will help beautify Ontario for residents as well as promote tourism.

Digital (or electronic) billboards in particular should be banned, due to their comparatively high impact on the visual environment and greater potential for driver distraction. We should not be risking lives in the name of advertising.

Highway users can be made aware of local businesses through MTO-approved and administered signage, such as those that already exist for gas stations and food outlets and some attractions. This program could be expanded to allow a greater variety of businesses as well as greater flexibility in terms of display and branding options. This approach would be just as effective as billboards in informing drivers but without the outsized physical and visual impact.

Finally, the current loophole that allows truck billboards along highways should be closed.

Thank you for your consideration.
