Hello
I have serious concerns about the Eagles Nest ( Ring of Fire) mining project and Bill 5. With the Province’s Environmental Oversight changes how will you address the following:
Will the dewatering mining process be used in Eagle's Nest?
How will you eliminate or minimize the impact on the peat and not affect the carbon sequestration capabilities?
How will you eliminate or minimize the impact on aquifers and the downstream effects on wildlife and drinking water?
What method of tailings storage will be used?
If underground tailings dams are used for storage, how will you prevent leakage?
Has this method been used before by Wyloo?
If not, what best practices are you basing this on?
How will you determine that no leakage will occur?
How will you monitor the groundwater?
How will you assess and manage this going forward?
How will you monitor the impact on wildlife & downstream drinking water from toxic metals?
If Wyloo closes or sells the mine, how will it be managed going forward to prevent leakage?
How will you manage First Nations concerns on peatlands being culturally, spiritually significant ?
How will you manage environmental, food and land use justice?
Will you consider reusing and recycling tailings to minimize storage through the Mining Value from Waste Program?
The Ring of Fire Eagles Nest Nickel Mine will be a major contributor to Canada's energy security and GDP. However it has significant ecosystem impacts that must be considered along with the partnership with First Nations communities, infrastructure and education/training of employees that will be hired from local communities.
