I strongly oppose this proposal. This irresponsible and dangerous proposal by the government would gut protections for vulnerable wildlife, fast track mining and development projects, trample Indigenous rights, silence local voices and create regulation-free zones for developers that place immediate monetary gain over environmental sustainability and healthy future growth.

Repealing the Endangered Species Act (ERO number 025-0380) and replacing it with an act that so far does not clarify how it will protect endangered species and which allows development to go ahead with development BEFORE assessments are complete will fail to protect and recover species at risk. Here are several of the problems I see with the new proposed Act: it isn’t set up to protect and recover species; it allows the government to ignore scientific data (seemingly if it is inconvenient); it values immediate financial gain over long-term environmental sustainability AND economic health. It redefines habitat to narrowly cover areas like dens and nests and makes the adding and removing of species discretionary and allows activities to go ahead as long as they are registered.

I support efficiencies, robust environmental laws, transparency and holding proponents to account to the highest standards. I do not support giving developers free rein. It is reckless and irresponsible to use the threat of Trump tariffs as a cover to trample Indigenous rights, sacrifice the environment and silence local voices.

I strongly urge you to repeal Bill 5.
