The proposed Bill 5 makes it evident that the current provincial government is only interested in the active and systematic dismantling of decades of progress in Ontario on protecting our land and environment for future generations. The environment policies and protections put in place are there for a reason and are backed by science. As a water resources engineer, I am deeply concerned that the passing of Bill 5 would cause irreversible damages to our native species and our waterways, which have direct adverse impact on public health and on future environmental and economic resilience to large magnitude climate events.
At a time where extreme climate events are occuring increasingly frequently, to the detriment of people and societies, the government is focusing on incorrect priorities in their inability to recognize the urgency in proactively mitigating the effects of climate change. The legacy of our generation should not be one of irreversible environmental damage based on excuses of protecting our economy.
