I am deeply opposed to the Special Economic Zones Act, 2025, ERO Number 025-0391. The act will remove the usual safeguards we have in place to protect the environment and it will remove the ability of local municipalities (the experts in their areas) to enforce planning. Although the act claims that "vetted projects in the zone with reliable proponents that meet high standards for operation, safety, and the environment" will benefit from reduced permits and stream-lined processing, it is precisely the process of obtaining these permits that actually qualifies the project as being of high standard. Thus, you are removing the actual test to determine if the project meets high environmental and safety standards. To have the minister or other government representative be the arbitrator of what qualifies as "high standard" is both ludicrous and a massive over-reach of power.
