The Special Economic Zones (Schedule 9) of Bill 5 is very concerning for me because of its affront to democracy. Our government has been set up so decisions are made by the legislature not just select individuals. Furthermore decisions about what happens in a municipality should have input from that municipality which has intimate knowledge of what is appropriate for development. Official plans and local by-laws have been established after thorough examination of the municipality and what is in the best interest of both the citizens and natural areas for the long term. Furthermore, bypassing consultation and engagement with First Nations governments could be considered a breach of Canada's constitution. The long term effects of designating Special Economic Zones will result in harm to the economy rather than benefits with costly environmental damage, disrupted communities and legal challenges. Schedule 9 of Bill 5 should be withdrawn.
