I am commenting here on the entirety of Bill 5: the "protect Ontario by unleashing our economy Act". The very title is alarming. To unleash something is to abandon control of something powerful - and to make decisions based purely on economic metrics is fool's gold. Our wildlife, our water, our workers, and our future deserve better.
The Endangered Species Act (ESA) is a cornerstone of environmental protection. It works to ensure the literal survival of Endangered Species! Politicians, lobbyists and developers are inherently biased against the tenets of this Act because of competing interests. So decisions that should be based on science, will become based on economic/political interests. To repeal the ESA is shortsighted and wrong.
Also, the Special Economics Zones Act is a threat to our democracy. To create law-free zones is dangerous. Laws are in place for a reason - usually because something bad happened and we, as a society, realized that better protections were needed to prevent the same from happening again. The concept of providing virtually unlimited power to a partisan group of politicians without any checks or balances, is dangerous and undemocratic. Environmental damage is all but ensured, and it is also a staggering affront to Indigenous and human rights.
I am opposed to this proposal and am I opposed to Bill 5. Signed, a life-long citizen of Ontario.
