The response to tariffs put in place by the United States government (or any other government) should not include removing environmental protection in any area “large” or “small”. Under that vague description, could the entire province be declared a special economic zone?
Given the proposed changes to the Endangered Species Act, there is doubt the “trusted proponents that meet high operating, safety and environmental standards” would have very high standards to meet. There seems to be a lot of latitude for allowing companies to do whatever they want to make the most money, rather than following established rules and regulations that apply elsewhere. Those rules and regulations were developed and put in place for a reason.
We cannot allow businesses to pillage our landscape just because there is some economic difficulty on the horizon. The future fallout from the environmental disasters that would come as a result of fragmenting or destroying ecosystems is not worth the short term economic gain. We must act in the best interests of our, and other species’ long term survival.
