If our current laws surrounding Ontario’s ability to grow economically are detrimental to Ontario's future, we should change them. But we should change them for all projects, not just certain projects deemed special economic zones. If the processes we have in place are there to protect our environment, protect endangered plants and animals, protect Indigenous rights and cultures, protect rural land and farmland, these laws should be protected so that they continue to be in place to protect. They can be reviewed and adjusted in an effort to make them more streamlined and efficient. If we give the government the ability to put aside the framework in place for the protection of these areas when they choose and without having any ability to stop them from doing so, then Bill 5 is intended to remove all of the current environmental laws and processes and reduce them to options that may or may not be followed. This government has shown it does not have respect for protected lands and environmental issues. It needs to have a framework within which to work to keep it accountable. Accountable always for all projects, not just for some. A sweeping right for Ontario’s government to put aside accountability as their prerogative is not in the best interest of Ontario. At the very least, we should have a chance to know more and to ask more questions.
